Information for Parents ...

How does a parent help prevent a child from being exploited?

1. BE AWARE of who your child spends time with, who your child's best friend is and why.

2. AVOID any overnight trips alone with an adult.

3. DO NOT put your child's first name on clothing or school books. This puts your child on a first name basis with anyone.

4. LISTEN when your child tells you that he or she does not want to be with or go with someone else.

5. TEACH your children they have the right to say NO. Never make your child submit to physical contact if they do not want to.

6. UNDERSTAND that no one should want to be with your child more than you. When someone is showing your child too much attention, ask yourself why.

7. QUESTION any money or gifts your child brings home.

8. ENCOURAGE open communication with your child.

9. KNOW the signs that a child may have been assaulted. (Indicators)

10. ASK your school to notify you when your child does not show up for school.

11. BELIEVE your children if they say they have been assaulted.
